The Convention on Biological Diversity is an international treaty signed during the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992, also known as “Earth Summit”.

Its objectives are: 1) the conservation of biological diversity, 2) the sustainable use of its components, 3) the fair and equitable participation in the benefits derived from the use of genetic resources, 4) equal access to genetic resources, 5) the transfer of appropriate technologies, 6) financing.

The International Day of Biological Diversity is celebrated on May 22nd.
